About US
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a rewarding field where a person can truly make difference in a person's life. Whether it is on the scene of a motor vehicle crash, caring for a victim of a heart attack, helping to deliver a baby or simply holding a scared patient's hand...the possibilities are endless. In Campbell County, EMS is primarily delivered by six independent rescue squads who collaboratively work with the Campbell County Department of Public Safety. Campbell County has rescue squads in the town of Altavista, town of Brookneal, village of Rustburg, Concord, in Gladys (Citizens Emergency Crew) and the Timberlake/Rainbow Forest area (Campbell County Rescue).
Emergency Medical Services in Virginia are regulated and overseen by the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services. In addition, EMS is coordinated at a regional level by the Blue Ridge EMS Council which serves as a liaison between field EMS agencies, the hospitals and the Virginia Office of EMS.
In order to provide EMS care a person must be a certified pre-hospital provider in Virginia. The levels of EMS certification in Virginia are:
First Responder (FR) - Training in CPR, Advanced First Aid and basic medical care which enables the person to be able provide care as a "third person".
Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) - The minimum level required to be an Attendant in Charge (AIC) on an ambulance. This level of training is provided free to volunteers in Campbell County.
Emergency Medical Technician Enhanced (EMT-E) - This level of training allows the provider to start IV's, administer fluids and administer basic medications.
Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMT-I) - This level of training allows the provider to start IV's, administer intravenous fluids, monitor cardiac rhythm's and administer medications.
Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P) - This level of training is at an Associates Degree level and allows the provider to deliver advanced skills care, monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, and administer medications.
No matter what your level of training currently is and/or what you want it to become...we can use your help! The volunteer rescue squads of Campbell County rely on professional citizen volunteers in order to serve the citizens of their respective response areas.
